How About Them Apples?

Yesterday, we had "Apple Day' as a grade level in honor of John (Johnny Appleseed) Chapman's upcoming birthday on September 26th. I divided my class into 4 groups to go with the 4 other classes and we had rotations.  The students did apple graphing, writing, art, and made caramel apples.

After lunch we gathered all 5 classes in the library kiva.  "Johnny Appleseed" was asleep in the front of the kiva as we came in.  Johnny was played by my mom.  She was dressed in jeans with rope suspenders, a plaid shirt, had bare feet, and had a pot on her head. She had a fringed buckskin type pouch filled with caramel apple suckers. She asked the kids questions about "Johnny" and when they answered (or tried to answer) she gave them a sucker.  Of course, in the end every student received a sucker. The kids loved it.

I accidentally called Johnny "mom" a couple of times, but I don't think the students noticed.  I did notice, however, that Johnny had some very adorable earrings on as she forgot to take them out of her ears.  I figure between the earrings and the makeup, Johnny was definitely feminine.  I hope we didn't sully his masculine reputation.
