Word Usage

Yesterday 2 women colleagues and I were discussing a mutual acquaintance we all know.  This man's life has been in an upheaval for some time now (his doing).  We were speculating whether or not he is on his third marriage or just living with the woman.  I made the comment about all his known dalliances. There was a pause...

No. 1.: Wow, I haven't heard that word in a long time.

No. 2.: I've never heard that word before.

No. 1.: I'm surprised you know it being as young as you are.

Me: I read a lot.

What is this word coming to when no one uses the word 'dalliance' anymore?
